I came across another video of the stage musical version of Cabaret, and I thought the show deserved yet another one, because this is quite special. When the 1993 Donmar Warehouse revival transferred to Broadway in 1998, Alan Cumming came along to repeat his acclaimed performance as the Emcee. However Sally Bowles was played by Natasha Richardson, for which she won the Tony Award as Best Actress in a Musical. And this is Natasha Richardson in performance as Sally Bowles. Further, she's singing a song here that many people likely don't know because it was cut out of the film version, "Perfectly Marvelous." So, unless you've seen the stage show, this will be a first for you. The song comes when Sally is trying to convince the young American writer, Cliff Bradshaw, who's just arrived in Berlin, to let her move in together with him. The video starts with the scene itself, and the jumps abruptly to the song. (And the clip ends even more abruptly.) Cliff, by the way is played by John Benjamin Hickey, who should be recognizable to most people through his innumerable TV appearances -- perhaps most notably as Laura Linney's homeless brother on The Big C, but so much else. He won a Tony Award two years ago as Best Featured Actor in a Play, for The Normal Heart. Here he is with the late-Natasha Richardson, with "Perfectly Marvelous." Which it is.
