You may remember the article and video I posted here a while back, when Maurice Cheeks -- then the coach of the Portland Trailblazers -- helped out a little girl when she forgot the words to the National Anthem she was performing before a playoff game.
Cheeks has been out of head coaching since early in the 2009 season. (He hasn't been out of basketball, having been an assistant coach in Oklahoma City.) Just a quick word to say that yesterday, Mo Cheeks was hired to be the head coach of the Detroit Pistons. Happily, nice goes sometimes finish first. Unhappily it's the Detroit Pistons. As a Chicago Bulls fan, the Pistons are in the same division and have long been one of the team's biggest rivals. Now, I can't dislike them -- at least as much. Happily, the team was not good last year (29-53), which is of course the reason they needed a new coach. Unhappily, that's the team Maurice Cheeks has to turn around. I hope he makes them better. Just not a whole lot better. Better enough to keep his new job.
