One From the Heart

Yesterday, I mentioned that in the 1947 movie, It Happened in Brooklyn, the songs were written by the great Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne, and I knew two of them.  The best known is the one I wrote about, “Time after Time.”  But the other became associated with Jimmy Durante, who often performed it in his act, “The Song Has to Come from the Heart.”

In the scene, Sinatra works for a music store and wants to become a song plugger, but he’s too shy.  Durante goes with him, to help give him confidence for his audition.  And while they’re waiting, he gives Sinatra some final advice.

As I mentioned yesterday, Sammy Cahn won four Best Song Oscars:  “Three Coins in a Fountain” (written with Styne) and others written with Jimmy Van Heusen – “All the Way,” “High Hopes” and “Call Me Irresponsible.”  And Jule Styne wrote the scores for Broadway musicals like Funny Girl, Gypsy, Bells are Ringing and (half the score of) Peter Pan.

I always loved the song whenever I’ve seen Jimmy Durante perform it.  I had no idea it was by Sammy Cahn and Jule Styne.
