One Down, Two Wishes to Go
Two days ago, I was driving with a friend, listening on the car radio to MSNBC on Sirius/XM. They had an analyst talking, saying things I generally agreed with, discussing the authoritarianism of today's Republican Party.
I said to my friend, though, that as much as I thought the story was correct, there was one thing missing. I hoped that reporters and analysts stopped talking about Democrats against Republicans, and authoritarianism, and the far-right wing of the Republican Party and things like that -- and instead, I wished they would soon start being more specific and calling it "Fascism," because that's what the Republican Party has become for several years now, by every book definition of the term. (As I've written and explained in detail here.) I've heard an occasional analyst use "fascist," but very very few. It's a more blunt word, and a much more accurate word. And far more damning.
Further, I said it's a word that Republicans seem to viscerally hate being called, even getting offended. Mind you, they're perfectly okay with calling Democrats "socialists" and "commies" for the past 70 years, despite not seeming to have any idea what the terms actually meant and being woefully inaccurate -- as opposite to "fascist" precisely describing today's GOP by the exact term. And what I said I always respond to Republicans online when they get oh-so upset at being called "fascist" is -- I completely understand why you don't like being called "fascist," but if you really don't like being called "fascist," then just stop acting like a fascist.
That conversation and wish was Tuesday.
And then the very next day, on Wednesday, yesterday, I saw this video ad below. It was put out by the bipartisan group Mission Democracy.
I've been trying hard to remember if, by accident, I happened to have found a magic genie lamp recently that granted three wishes and didn't realize I had rubbed it...
May this be the opening door to a flood.
