On Your Mark, Get Set...Stay!
I had something else planned for today, but honestly how could we not change direction and head over once again to Mark Robinson. Robinson is the Lt. Governor of North Carolina who is running for Governor against the state's Attorney General Josh Stein. I originally wrote about him a year ago, back in July, 2023, when he came to my attention for his endorsing people who quote Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot and other despots. And other soul-emptiness of a kind that you wouldn't even expect from the drunk racist screaming at the moon on a street corner, but especially a state's Lt. Governor, running for governor.
Since that article, as he hit the campaign trail, more from Robinson has oozed out, much of it on video. Like saying some liberals deserve to be killed, being a Holocaust denier, demeaning women and wishing we could go back before the time when they had the vote, saying that Beyoncé’s fans are "devil worshippers," and much more. Oh, so much more.
Which is what made the news yesterday so notable on many levels with a story breaking about posts that Robinson allegedly made on a porn website, including calling himself a “Black Nazi” (one of the great, delusional contradiction in terms), defending slavery, saying he would peek into women’s locker room, and also making lewd comments so unspeakable that news reporters wouldn’t repeat them on television (that's how crude it was) and much more. Oh, so much more.
So much more that there were questions raised whether Robinson would drop out of the race, as well as reports of behind-the-scenes pressure from the Trump campaign which is so concerned that he’s dragging down the Trump-“Vance” ticket by being 10 points behind in the gubernatorial race. And North Carolina is such a critical state for Trump, a state once considered a sure thing, that analysts say if Harris wins it (which pollsters largely have her up by 1-3 points), then Trump may have a difficult time winning the general election.
What leaps out most from all this is that Mark Robinson is on the record, as I said, for being a Holocaust denier; endorsing others quoting Hitler, Mao, Stalin & Castro; demeaning women; slamming LGBTQ, saying some liberals who should be killed; saying Beyonce's fans are "devil worshippers," and much more. And this is the line they draw?!! Not just “they,” but this is the line that the Trump team – whose own candidate has been convicted of 34 felonies, been found liable for rape, guilty of fraud, says he wants to be a dictator, says he wants to terminate the U.S. Constitution and more, much more -- draw as a bridge too far for Robinson to drop out???!!
By the way, to be fair to Robinson, he has said he is not a Holocaust denier and loves the Jewish people. Though, to be fair to reality, calling oneself a “Black Nazi” tends to make his love of Jewish people and stance on the Holocaust just a wee bit less defensible.
Though to be fair to Robinson, as well, he denies that he wrote any of these things, saying, "You know my words, you know my character." On the other hand, to be fair again to reality, that's the core problem -- people do know his words and character, being a Holocaust denier; endorsing others who quote Hitler, Mao, Stalin & Castro; demeaning women; slamming LGBTQ, saying some liberals who should be killed, and more.
But also to be fair to Robinson, he also says the porn site postings could have been done by A.I. The problem though is, as reality would point out, that the online posts were made in 2008, long, long before A.I. Y'know, like...oops.
FUN FACT: Nowhere in his response did Robinson deny that he wrote the posts. All he said was "Those are not the words of Mark Robinson." Since they were written under his username "minisoldr" (which he's used on other sites), for all we know Robinson is using that legerdemain to film-flam that they're the words of his alter-ego, "minisoldr."
Robinson has said he has no intention of leaving of the race. And he had until last night by North Carolina law to have his name removed from the ballot and drop out. So, for now, he's staying in the race. (Though this being North Carolina, which has already screwed around with state law by letting Robert Kennedy Jr. remove himself from ballot after the deadline, who knows…?)
My own hope, and that of others I’ve seen on the news, is that with Robinson 10 points behind in North Carolina and likely dragging Trump down in the state (otherwise they wouldn't care one iota about having endorsed a "Black Nazi"), is that I want him to stay in the race. As I was reminded by a friend of James Carville’s saying, “When your opponent is drowning, throw him an anvil.”
Of all the tweets online about Mark Robinson’s Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, my favorite was from Erick Erickson, an extreme-right blogger and podcaster who became editor-in-chief and chief executive of the very-far-right website RedState. He wrote that the problem was that Robinson hadn’t been vetted enough.
As I replied, oh, my yes, that was the problem. After all, Mark Robinson is the Lieutenant Governor of North Carolina and has been in office for four years, and isn't some unknown guy who slipped through the MAGOP cracks. But, dang, he just hadn’t been vetted enough. I noted in response that I had written about who Mark Robinson was one year ago, and if I could figure this out -- a year ago! -- from public articles available to everyone, the MAGOP surely could have.
The problem isn’t that Mark Robinson hasn’t been “vetted” enough, since so many of his repugnant screeds were very public -- Holocaust denying; endorsing the quoting of Hitler, Mao, and Stalin; hatred of women; hatred of LGBTQ; defending slavery, killing some liberals – it’s that the MAGOP have long known his views and are okay with them. It’s only with Robinson being down by 10 points and probably dragging down the Trump ticket that MAGOPs finally are having problems with their “Black Nazi.”
The problem for the MAGOP is that with Robinson down by 10 points, needing to close that big gap, this story can only hurt him. It certainly can’t help him in any way since he already has the racist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, homophobic, neo-Nazi vote wrapped up. And while I hope he stays in the race, even he changes his mind and is able to drop out, the MAGOP party in North Carolina would have to figure out who to run in his place, with early voting scheduled to start, against a popular sitting-Attorney General already up by 10 points.
Of course, there's one other problem the MAGOP have in North Carolina, on top of all this: thus far, no MAGOP candidate in the state has called for him to drop out, or even just criticized him. (Not just criticize him for this, but anything.) But then, that's who the MAGOP is. And Democrats are already putting out ads showing their opponents with Robinson and tying them all together.
For those who’ve missed it when I’ve previously posted my article, here’s the piece from a year ago on Mark Robinson who apparently the Trump team, Erick Erickson and MAGOP officials didn’t realize he was has reprehensible as he told everyone publicly and on camera that he was.
Completely Missing the Mark
July 7, 2023
Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R-NC) is an extreme-right Christian Nationalist who has announced his campaign to run for governor. Describing him as a far-right Christian National is not hyperbole, it’s something he’s happily promoted and aggressively embraced.
Robinson has called himself “more preacher than politician,” and said it’s his goal “to literally make war on the devil” so that America is “led by the people of God,” in order that Christian Nationalist values “reign supreme” in North Carolina and defeat what he considers “the enemies of freedom,” which apparently are those who disagree with him by, among other things, wanting the Constitutional right given to all Americans to practice any religion they choose, not just Christianity or Christian Nationalism. So, y’know, “freedom” (sic).
So, not only would Mark Robinson not be offended by being called a far-right Christian Nationalist, it seems likely he would be upset if you didn’t. But here’s the thing, that’s not the point here, it’s just the background.
The point is that far-right Christian Nationalist Mark Robinson, Lt. Governor of North Carolina and Republican candidate for governor, just endorsed the quoting of Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao and other "despots," saying "it is time for us to get back and start reading some of those quotes.”
That’s not a typo. Nor is it from the satirical publication The Onion. Nor is it exaggeration. Or a generalization. It's his exact words from a speech that he gave at the recent Moms for Liberty (sic) convention, their egregiously-named "Joyful Warriors" Summit in Philadelphia over the July 1 weekend. Moms for Liberty (sic) – that’s the group just in the news because one of its chapters quoted Adolf Hitler on the front page of its newsletter. This was no under-the-wire event: among other speakers were Trump, Ron DeSantis and Nikki Haley.
And just to be clear, so as not to take him out of context, what Mark Robinson (R-NC) said at the Moms for Liberty (sic) convention was -- “Whether you’re talking about Adolf Hitler. Whether you’re talking about Chairman Mao. Whether you’re talking about Stalin. Whether you’re talking about Pol Pot. Whether you’re talking about Castro in Cuba, or whether you’re talking about a dozen other despots all around the globe, it is time for us to get back and start reading some of those quotes.”
To paraphrase the great journalist Molly Ivins, it reads even worse in the original German.
Here's the odd thing (putting aside a whole lot of odd things): not only do I find it sick, disturbing and shocking that a Christian Nationalist thinks quoting Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Pol Pot and Mao is a good thing, but I suspect that even Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Pol Pot and Chairman Mao themselves would all be shocked to learn that a Christian Nationalist was endorsing them.
Once upon a time – like seven years ago – a politician’s career in the United States would be dead and deeply buried if they endorsed reading any one of these despots. But all of them??!! Once upon a time – before Trump made it fashionable for Republicans to embrace despots – Republicans made a career out of crying “Better dead than Red” and trying to paint what they claimed were supposedly pinko liberal socialist Democrats and fellow travelers with these scourges of humanity. But no longer, because today it seems that Republicans (especially Christian Nationalists) are elbowing everyone out of the way to literally embrace such tyrants. Democrats don’t have to falsely point fingers at these Christian Nationalist Republicans and make untrue inuendoes about them supposedly following repulsively autocratic, anti-democratic, fascist leaders – because the Republicans themselves are shouting it out loud to let you know on what spot of hell they stand. And to be clear, this isn’t about Mark Robinson (R-NC) telling you all to read the words of dictators – he’s singling out the worst despots in modern history, some of them among the worst in all of human history.
While I understand that today’s fascist Republican Party since Trump has been aligning itself with authoritarian dictators – from Vladimir Putin to Turkey's Erdogan to Philippine president Duterte to Trump’s love letters with Kim Jong Un and saying how much he admires China’s Xi Jinping being President for Life to CPAC inviting Viktor Orban to be a keynote speaker and then later holding a convention in his Hungary – making clear that authoritarian government is what the GOP wants, when that reaches the stage of telling people to read the words of Adolf Hitler alone, forget all the others, but then add Joseph Stalin, Fidel Castro, Pol Pot and Chairman Mao, it would seem to take GOP interests to another level and be several miles too far for even today’s Republican Party and hideously unacceptable. With “seem” being the operative word.
What will be interesting to see is if any Republican leaders publicly disagree with Mark Robinson (R-NC) and take him to task on human decency on the history of violent repression. Or if any Christian leaders do.
And to be clear, I’m being low-key here by saying "any," because of course all of them should. Giving them a break by merely going for just “any” is like an easy lay-up.
For now, the one positive thing is that only Mark Robinson (R-NC) has gone full-Adolf in his public statements. And though he’s a Lt. Governor, which puts him on a high pedestal in a state with a Republican House and Senate, as he runs for governor, the current North Carolina governor is a Democrat, and the state only went for Trump by a razor thin 1.34%. So, for a Republican state, it’s clearly willing to vote for Democrats – and hopefully not support someone so virulently extreme. As in, endorsing the writings of Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, Pol Pot, Chairman Mao and Fidel Castro. And "a dozen other despots."
And Mark Robinson (R-NC) certainly is virulently extreme. There were actually calls for him to resign two years ago after he referenced LGBTQ community as, basically, “filth,” reiterating, so as not to be misunderstood, that “Yes, I called it filth.” And adding that “And if you don’t like it that I called it ‘filth,’ come see me and I’ll explain it to you” – “it” being “transgenderism” and “homosexuality.”
It doesn’t go without note that Republican states are banning books on LGBTQ topics, but the Republican Lt. Governor of North Carolina is suggesting that people should read the works of Hitler, Stalin, Chairman Mao, Pol Pot, and Castro. And those "other dozen despots."
Ah, those wacky Christian Nationalists and Republicans these days...
By the way, if one wants to know why Christian Nationalism has come under so much scorn and given rise to dismissing the supposed piety of this branch of Republican religious conservatism, you need look no further than the holier-than-no one, intolerant, hate-filled leadership of Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson (R-NC).
Nor does it go without note that while Mark Robinson (R-NC) encourages people that “it is time for us to get back and start reading some of those quotes” by Hitler, Stalin and all his favorite despots, what Robinson – who is black – conveniently wants us and even himself to overlook is that “those quotes” he admires and endorses by Adolf Hitler include Der Fuhrer’s venomous writing promoting Aryans and the Nazi Master Race, not one word of which allows for the acceptance of black people. So, the Robinson Required Reading List is weirdly and pathetically myopic in its craven, heavily-edited, deeply limited, tragically short-sighted, and perhaps self-loathing praise of despots.

All of which Mark Robinson (R-NC) is willing to ignore, just because he wants a world of Christian Nationalists and only Christian Nationalist. Even if one of his heroes would not have him exist in that very world. Or most likely any world.
And Republican Party leaders and its religious leaders are silent. Because it suits their needs. Which speaks to who they are.
