O Promise Me
For reasons that aren't quite clear, other than maybe she had some free time on her hands or perhaps when you sign yourself over to Trump you're obligated to do stuff like this once a month, GOP Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel posted a tweet yesterday which read --
In 2016, Trump promised to: Cut taxesBuild the wall*Nominate judges*Get out of the Paris deal*End the Iran deal*Grow manufacturing jobs*Move the embassy to Jerusalem*Hold China accountable He kept his promises!
I read what she wrote and could only think – “You say this like a good thing??
Tax cuts for the wealthy significantly raised the deficit.
Leaving the Paris Accord during the worldwide climate crisis was disastrous.
Ending Iran nuke deal put us all at risk. (And how weird to bring up Trump and anything nuclear right now??!!.)
Moving our embassy in Israel to Jerusalem remains a dangerous act.
But all that aside –
Manufacturing jobs actually decreased, but about 220,000 jobs, I think!
He most certainly did not build The Wall, or even come close.
To think he’s held China “accountable” borders on fantasy. (This would be the same China that gave Ivanka Trump 18 patents!)
And among the judges Trump nominated, for just one example, was Aileen Cannon who’s ruling on a Special Master was so widely viewed as incompetent Trump suck-up that even William Barr shredded it.
But then, what Ms. Romney McDaniel left out were all the other Trump promises, No, they weren’t all made in 2016, but some were. And all were promises, as long as we’re going by the standard of “Promises kept!”
No promised Infrastructure Week(s).
No promised big, beautiful healthcare plan.
Never released his taxes, as promised, once the fictional “audit” was done.
Never had Melania give her press conference on immigration status that he promised.
Mexico did not pay a penny for The Wall, like he relentlessly promised, “Mark my words!”
It turns out that COVID did not go away like a miracle, as he promised.
He promised he would be too busy to play golf.
He didn’t lock up Hillary Clinton, like he promised.
He promised to end the opioid crisis, to end DACA, to bring peace to the Middle East, to have term limits on members of Congress, to negotiate a better deal than the one he pulled out of at the Paris Accord, to revive the coal industry. Never done, never done, never done, never done, never done, never done,
And on and on and on and on.
On the one hand, I don’t have a clue why Ronna Romney McDaniel would release a statement like that on Twitter that she has to know can be – and will be – so easily shredded, and will bring up all his broke promises and disastrous actions.
On the other hand, yeah, this is today’s GOP. You pander to your base that doesn’t appear to know any better and doesn’t seem to care.
But still, all that aside, what a weird thing to post when Trump is not only not in office, not a candidate for anything at the moment and under six federal and state investigations, including one for breaking the Espionage Act.
And on the same day his PAC got subpoenas. And his former top advisor had a perp walk in court.
Grifters got to grift. Fascists got to fasc.
