My friend Adam Belanoff, who writes wonderfully for The Closer and Major Crimes, has been hocking me for the past couple of weeks to vote for Eric Garcetti in today's mayoral race in Los Angeles. I know the real reason he's doing this -- a while back, he hired Garcetti to play the Los Angeles mayor on his show, and he wants to be able to say, and say honestly, "I made Eric Garcetti the mayor of Los Angeles." A few minutes ago he sent me the following video by Will Ferrell promoting Eric Garcetti, saying he hoped this would sway me. I wrote back to say that at the very least it swayed me to vote for Will Ferrell. This is not an endorsement. What this is, is just one of the funniest actor-endorsements I've ever seen. (I would add that it not only speaks well of Ferrell, but for Garcetti to let Ferrell do this his way. That's not a reason to vote for someone for mayor, but it's admirable none-the-less.) If Wendy Gruel had an equally funny celebrity endorsement, I'd post it, as well. But as far as I know, she doesn't.

OK, I don't mind that almost everything out of Ferrell's mouth isn't true, but "Native Angeleno"? He's from Irvine! Orange County is not LA, no matter what the TV news departments think. I spent my childhood having to correct relatives when they said I lived in LA; instead of Orange County. Its a pet peeve of mine. As far as your friend's endorsement of Eric Garcetti goes; wouldn't it have as much to do with Gil being a producer on Major Crimes as Eric appearing on the show as the mayor? :)

I don't know if almost everything isn't true -- though I don't know the contrary either. But if he's from Irvine, I agree with your pet peeve. Hey, it bugs me that the Angels are trying to pawn themselves off as being from Los Angeles (although they were initially). As for my friend, he was pretty upfront about his preferences being personal, and acknowledged being friends with Gil, as well. But he did say that as a result of all that, he's come to like Eric's politics. But the heart of it is personal, knowing and liking the guy. But honestly, I didn't mean an endorsement at all, I just liked the video.

"I was sad when they moved to Anaheim."

Don't worry. I completely understood that you posted the video because it amused you. Other than my irritation at the "Native Angelno" comment, I meant the rest of my comment to be tongue in cheek. I might have been a little too dry. Ultimately, since I don't live in LA, I don't have a horse in the race; except for having to stare at the winner every night on the news for at least the next four years. I never thought that I'd miss Villaraigosa.
