Mr. Smith Went to Washington
I don't expect anyone to watch this whole thing -- myself included. It's 8-1/2 hours long. But this being the continuation of the long New Year's weekend, perhaps it can be broken up over the next three days. Or month... Or at the very least, just jumped around and watched for a half hour or so. But it's too important not to at least post.
This is Jack Smith's full testimony behind closed doors to the House Judiciary Committee.
By the way, when the video and transcripts were posted online, all the news shows were asking the same, obvious question -- Why did the MAGOP-led committee release all this now? And of course, the answer (which they all knew when asking) was that if you dump it on New Year's Eve, it will get buried and ignored as much as possible. What I wondered, though, was their use of the word…”now”. My own question was different, it was -- Why did the MAGOPs release it? At all. Period. Were they obligated to? If so, then I would understand why “now”. But if they weren’t obligated, and I don't aware that they were -- why did they release it?? It could only be damning to Trump and their side. I’m thrilled they released it, of course. Just incredibly surprised – unless they had to.
Also, I suspect their hopes of burying it on New Year's Eve will not come to fruition. Not only do I expect all the news shows to cover it -- at length -- starting on Monday, but the House Judiciary Committee might even have done the news media a favor. After all, there is so much material -- 8-1/2 hours of it -- that no immediate news story could do it justice to go through it all. But having five days to cull through everything, they can do their deep dive beginning next week having had a chance to read through and watch everything that's there.
All this aside, what I also wonder is if Democrats will call Jack Smith to testify in public (which is what he offered to do), if they take control of the House in 2026. Few people will watch the full 8-1/2 hours. But if Jack Smith appears in a public hearing for two to four hours -- or however long -- many of the TV networks would cover it live, and viewership by the American public would be significantly higher than for just this video.
We'll find out.
As a friend of mine said -- Happy Blue Year.
