Mary Old England
I figure that as long as NBC is on a Mary Martin kick (okay, not really, but...hey, they do seem to be going through the Mary Martin Songbook for their live musicals, with The Sound of Music and Peter Pan...), I might as well join the party. I have a bunch more interesting videos with her, and thought that this would be as good a time as any to bring them out. There are some real treats in the mix upcoming -- actually, all of them are pretty special, I think, so that puts the "real treats" in impressive perspective.
We'll start, though, with another clip from that 1951 London production of South Pacific of which an amazing 31 minutes were captured on film. We've shown a bit of it here previously (you can do a search for it on the site...), and here's one more. It's probably one of her famous numbers, "I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair," where she shampoo'd on stage every night.
I'm still amazed that so much of her performance in this show is on film.
