Madam, I'm Adam
On Saturday, MSNBC host Ali Velshi had Democratic Rep. Adam Smith of Washington state as a guest. The congressman had tremendous, almost 7-minute, blistering attack on Trump. Three things impressed me about it --
First is the obvious, that Rep. Smith relentlessly pointed out major Trump lie after lie, noting that all Trump ever does through his career is lie. He was detailed and meticulous -- so much so that when he later realized he'd overlooked one notable Trump lie, he went back to it.
Second, and perhaps best of all, is that it wasn't just a laundry list of Trump lies, but he tied Trump's lying about the Epstein scandal to all of what Trump does, connecting the dots to everything Trump has always done and lied about. Making the point that “this is what we have to call him out for” and hold him accountable for -- but also, very importantly, tying the MAGOPs in Congress to this.
And third, what was most impressive of it all to me was how incredibly low-key in Smith was in his presentation, almost genial. So often when we see MAGOP slamming Democrats, it feels like we're about to see a blood vessel burst in fury, which can only appeal to those who already agree, while putting up a defensive wall for others. But Rep. Smith is almost matter-of-fact even, almost inviting you in to listen to his friendly chat -- even when calling Trump a “scumbag” repeatedly. This isn't to say everyone will like what he has to say. They won't. The Trump base would viscerally hate it. But Smith is not talking to them, he's talking to everyone else. Just calmly, personably stating his anger and why.
And showing how it's all done.
And besides, it's not often when I get to use a palindrome for a title.
Here's the video.
