Last Week Tonight the Other Night
If you missed Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Sunday, the Main Story was on Emergency Medical Services. It's a very interesting piece that's centered around bewilderment that EMS is not considered an essential service, which causes major problems for it, particularly financial. But the show is able to throw in some good humor, as well.
While not part of the Main Story, there was an extensive report in the beginning news segment about supporting Afghan translators. And it was one of the first, if not the first, report I've seen them do that I thought was extremely off-base. It's not that what he was saying was wrong at heart -- it wasn't, they were right to say this is a critical issue, supporting people whose lives and those of their family are now at risk. But the anger that something must be done by the government misses the reality that only last week the U.S. Senate did vote unanimously (!) to fund a program bringing the translators to the U.S. And the House had previously voted the same thing by a huge vote of around 399-16. So, while pushing to legislators to act even more aggressively is a good thing, for the show to ignore these two votes that authorized action and be outraged by Congress's supposed inaction seems weird.
