Last Week Tonight the Other Night
If you missed Last Week Tonight with John Oliver on Sunday, the main story was on elections in India, with a focus on its Prime Minister Narendra Modi, attempting to solidify his control on the country by winning his third election. Actually, I should have said "...with a focus again on its Prime Minister," since this is the third report that the show has done on Modi -- who has done some important things for the country, yet too often edges across the line into authoritarianism.
The segment is fascinating and detailed about such a convoluted country politically as India -- yet also very entertaining and often extremely funny.
It should be added as an update that the elections subsequently took place, and they did not go as Modi hoped. His party not only fell far short of its goal to win at least 400 of the 543 seats in Parliament, but actually lost 60 seats. Worse, it does not have a majority in Parliament any more, which means Modi has to build a coalition with other minority parties.
