It's Elementary

The British series Sherlock returned to PBS last night, and among many things -- including him returning from the dead after the Reichenbach Falls episode -- this was the episode where Dr. Watson got engaged.

That brought to mind the 1965 Broadway musical Baker Street, about...well, you know.  It starred Fritz Weaver as Sherlock Holmes and had a modest run, with a score by Raymond Jessel (whose recent cabaret work I've featured here) and Marian Grudeff.  The score is inconsistent, but generally pretty nice.  And there was even one breakout hit from it, oddly enough talk/sung by, of all people, Richard Burton.  It's a lovely, wistful number sung by Dr. Watson about his life, called "A Married Man.

Rather than play the selection from the cast album with Peter Sallis, here instead is the composer himself, Ray Jessel, doing a wonderful, affectionate job with it.
