Harry Truman was Right

Okay, once again, I had to write my article for today in the later afternoon, because I wanted to watch the evening speeches -- and didn't want to stay up to midnight afterwards writing anything because...well, I have a life.  Within a manner of speaking.  However, I would be deeply remiss if I didn't at lest reference the speeches.  And so, halfway through Michelle Obama's speech, I posted on Twitter --

"Oh, my God. What an AMAZING night of speeches. And we haven’t even got to Barack Obama yet!!!"

And not only, after posting that, did Michelle Obama's speech take a turn and soared even higher, blowing the room off the United Center, but then Barack Obama (who rightly said he was "the only person foolish enough to follow Michelle Obama") personalized it all, combined everything of the evening and was masterful.

An amazing night of speeches -- from Bernie Sanders, Chuck Schumer, J.B. Pritzker, Tammy Duckworth, Doug Emhoff (sorry, he gets an "!" because it was so unexpected), Michelle Obama to Barack Obama.

Which takes us to a look at the first night.

A couple of days ago, I saw a comment from the Harris-Walz campaign that if the TV ratings of their convention were better than the RNC, they would troll Trump about it.  The ratings for the first night are in, and 20 million people watch.  For the RNC’s first night, they had 18 million.  I can’t wait…!  And with Barack Obama and Michelle Obama speaking last night, it’s hard to imagine that Night 2 won’t draw a bigger audience than the RNC’s.

But the thing is, overall, the RNC, and MAGOPs were freaking out and having meltdowns all day.  That’s how bad a night it was for them.  And it was just a convention, after all.  A party, back-slapping, self-praise and joy.  It was actually pretty benign, most especially compared to the dystopian vision of hell that the RNC put on.  But then, perhaps that’s why Trump and the others were having such a hard time handling it.

The Trump and MAGOP meltdown over just Day 1 made me think of a comment that Harry Truman once made.  He was, of course, known as “Give ‘em hell, Harry.”  And at one event where he was giving a speech when someone in the crowed yelled out, “Give ‘em hell!!!!!”  And Truman responded, “I don’t give ‘em hell.  I just tell the truth, and they think it’s hell.”

Here are just a very few of the stories that made the news all day.  These are all headlines on the Raw Story website at 5 PM yesterday.  And this is only after Day 1 of the Democratic National Convention.  Man, I’m not quite sure if I can even imagine the freakout meltdowns by Thursday.

But this is just a very brief glance at Trump and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day 1.

“'They lied!' Trump goes off-script at crime speech to gripe about DNC attacks against him”

(“Angry and ranting full of lies”, he went on.  One can only imagine what he said in private.  Though with Trump, you never quite know for sure if he knows the difference.)

“Trump baffles onlookers with claim Americans can't buy bread without getting raped or shot”

("You can't walk across the street to get a loaf of bread,” he said, “you get shot, and you get mugged, you get raped, whatever it may be. You've seen it. I've seen it.”

“Fox News axes Trump campaign speech after he says 'election was rigged'”

(Apparently, having to pay $787 million in a defamation settlement overing saying that a company rigged its voting machines has a lingering affect.)

“Laura Ingraham pouts about DNC's 'Lock Her Up' chants: Maga's were 'all in good fun'”

(Ahhh, so now it turns out it was all in good fun.  If only they let us know for the past eight years.  But of course, in fairness to Democrats who totally have missed the joke, there is a big different with what they are saying.  After all, Trump is actually a convicted felon who has an actual sentencing hearing coming up.)

“'A nice gentleman': 'Losing' Trump suddenly changes opinion on Obama”

(Yes, really, Trump called Barack Obama “a nice gentleman,” though adding that he was terrible on trade.  Not to worry, after former-President Obama’s speech on Tuesday, I am 100% sure -- as sure as I am of anything this political season -- Trump will return to saying how much he hates him and the world will be back to normal.)

'Why wouldn't they like me?' Trump unable to believe he's unpopular with women

(“Apparently Trump hasn’t gotten the news yet that he took credit for ending Roe v. Wade and has said women who had an abortion should go to prison and that he was found liable of rape and made a guy who demeans single cat ladies and post-menopausal women as his running mate.  The good news is that this might be the first time in his delusional life that he’s recognized that someone doesn’t like him.)

“'Did you fall on your head?' Megyn Kelly blasted for 'racist' response to DNC speech”

The former-Fox host, who previously was outraged at seeing a Black Santa because, she said, the mythical Santa Claus is white, tweeted “Laphonza Butler spkg - (she filled Feinstein’s seat) - celebrating that she and Harris both graduated from historically black colleges. Imagine the white person up there: I’m proud to tell you I went to a mostly white university!”
