Handle with Carell
A couple weeks ago, Steve Carell gave the commencement address at the beloved Northwestern. (He didn't go there -- though Stephen Colbert did -- however, his daughter graduated from NU last year, and he has a son attended now. Also, Carell did go to Northwestern for their summer "Cherub Program" for high school students.)
This isn't the speech (which was, not surprisingly, wonderful, with a very funny tweak in the middle of it) -- though I think I'll be posting that tomorrow. I'd wanted to post it earlier but, for a particular reason that I'll get into when I do post it, I didn't get access to a good copy until just the other day. And I wanted to wait for that before posting this.
And what this is -- is a Q&A that Carell did before giving the address, sitting down in a campus theater with Northwestern president Michael Schill. He's a skillful president, interviewing is not one of those skills, but it's still a lot of fun.
(If you listen carefully, you'll hear Carell's wife, actress-writer Nancy Walls Carell, sitting in the back of the auditorium.)
I've had a couple of occasions crossing paths with Carell, and both times he was a complete gem. I'll tell the stories with the commencement address.
