Gone with the Windmill
This is sort of unbelievable. I’d say it was unbelievable, rather than just “sort of,” but given the source, I think that – when all is said and done – you will absolutely be able to believe it.
I wasn’t quite sure what to write about for today, but had somewhat of a rough idea. But then this came along late yesterday, and all other ideas were put aside. There was no way I couldn’t write about it.
Because it’s sort of unbelievable.
Yesterday morning, I wrote a piece here about all the many transgressions of Trump and the Republican Party over the past five years. And for one of the great many on the list, I included –
“Trump abandoned our Kurdish allies, who were holding 11,000 ISIS prisoners, by removing troops from the Syrian border with Turkey, letting Erdogan’s army invade, ISIS prisoners to escape, hundreds killed, and creating 130,000 Kurdish refugees, dismissing bipartisan criticism as ‘It’s not our border’ and ‘If Turkey goes into Syria, that’s between Turkey and Syria’ – quotes to remember the next time he tries to claim he’d have stood up to Putin invading Ukraine.”
Not that that reminder is really necessary, of course, since few people other than the most unswerving Trump acolytes would think Trump would even consider standing up to Putin about almost anything, but especially invading Ukraine. After all, not only did he set his standard, as noted above, with Turkey and Syria, but we know he also tried to blackmail the president of Ukraine to lie and help him personally for political reason, but he withheld money for Ukraine’s defense that had been authorized by Congress, and he also refused to have invite the president of Ukraine to the White House. So, the idea of Trump standing up to Putin over Ukraine transcends the concept of maniacally laughable.
And then Trump proved it uncontrovertibly yesterday. Showing as clear as could be, maybe even to some of his acolytes that he had absolutely nothing. In a way that was…well, sort of unbelievable.
Really. Honest. If I wasn’t clear, this is sort of unbelievable. Except that it’s Trump, so, y’know…yeah, okay. But it’s still sort of unbelievable.
Trump was doing an interview at Mar-a-Lago with the NelkBoys podcast because podcasts seem to be most of what he’s limited to these days. Certainly he’s speaking to his base on them, but his base is going to vote for him no matter what, including if he said something reprehensible like – oh, let’s make up something that’s repulsive – that Putin is a “genius, and podcasts to his base are not going to expand beyond that.
And in the interview, Trump was asked how the Russian invasion of Ukraine would end, how he saw it all unfolding. And Trump – who not much more than a year ago was the commander-in-chief of the U.S. military forces – gave this answer. An answer that was sort of unbelievable.
He said – and I’m sorry, but I must interrupt here to make clear this is all true. This is not me making something up imbecilic to make Trump sound even more totally clueless, no, make that insane, than he already is, and flailing for a lifeline since he doesn’t have an answer. And even knowing that, it’s still almost unbelievable. And what he said to the question of how he saw the horrific Russian invasion of Ukraine unfolding…on the same day the news told of a Russian attack that damaged a nuclear power plant risking a nuclear melt down…what Trump said was –
"Well, and I said this a long time ago, if this happens, we are playing right into their hands. Green energy. The windmills, they don't work, they're too expensive, they kill all the birds, they ruin your landscapes, and yet, the environmentalists love the windmills. I've been preaching this for years, the windmills."
Honest. Really. I swear.
Hey, I told you it was sort of unbelievable.
But then, of course, sadly, being Trump, yeah, pathetically, you can sort of, kind of believe it.
This is who Republicans are following slavishly, near-religously as their leader. This is his analysis on how the Russian invasion of Ukraine will end -- from the man who says it wouldn't have happened if he was in charge. No wonder the far right has been trying SO hard to convince you that President Joe Biden is the one who has lost it and who has dementia. Which you know they will do and keep doing.
And remarkably, he even had a ribbon on the end to make it even more stupid. Which amazingly is possible. He added a final word on windmills –
"And they don't work.”
By the way, windmills do work. They have for a very long time.
And since I’m sure there are still some people thinking, “Oh, please, you’re making this up. Even with all your denials, not even Trump is that totally lost and empty and soulless and completely out of it” – here is the evidence. As they say in sports, let’s go to the video.
And even with all that…and even knowing what he said -- and even watching him say it!!...it is still sort of unbelievable.
I wasn't lying. Or exaggerating. As much as both seemed likely.
It is my fondest hope that the Democratic Party makes a TV ad out of this. And plays it over and over and over.
It turns out that we’ve all that the wrong last name for young master Don Trump. Because apparently it’s never been Trump at all – but Quixote.
The crazy, old, delusional man who is living in a total fantasy world of another lost time, tilting at false…say it all together now…windmills.
