From the "Very Stable Genius" Files
Yesterday, in a speech in Derry, New Hampshire, Trump help burnish his credentials as – well, okay, this will be snarky, but I can’t phrase it better, since it’s accurate – a very unstable idiot.
In the speech, he at one point referred to French President Emmanuel Macron and noted that “You know, he's for France. I'm for us. I'm for us. You know how you spell 'us' right? You spell it U-S!”
Okay, that’s pretty benign, but as the crowd cheered, Trump – being Trump – took a deep dive and, unable to pass up a chance to let everyone know his incredible self-observed brilliance, kept going.
"I just picked that up.” Trump continued. “Has anyone ever thought of that be — I just picked that up.”
And the crowd kept cheering. What’s unclear is if Trump followers were so excited by Trump’s pride of linguistic insight, or none of them had ever thought of that before.
By the way, it gets worse. Because he kept going on and on about his cleverness realizing for the first time in 80 years that “U.S.” also spells “us.” And not just that, but about his overall brilliance, and huge crowds and how handsome he is. (Yes, really.) But just reading the words doesn’t do it justice – because his giddy enthusiasm at how he actually made this amazing discovery that “U.S” spells “us” and explained it to others (since he’s apparently surrounded by people who never realized this either) is far more impacting when seeing the actual video. And realizing that this man was not only elected President of the us, but had access to nuclear secrets and codes and still holds a 50-point lead over his GOP opponents for the party’s presidential nomination.
As if being found guilty of fraud, being found liable for the equivalence of rape, having his charity shut down for a “shocking pattern of illegality,” being impeached twice, and being indicted four times wasn’t enough – not to mention apparent evidence of him actually giving away some of those nuclear secrets – now we have to add him thinking that, for the first time in his life, he not only realized that “U.S.” spells “us,” but that he seems to think no one else has ever thought this, too.
Dear God in heaven.
Of course, this isn’t the first time Trump has had these revelations. The first time this came to my attention was in 2017, when he did an interview with The Economist and said at one point, “We have to prime the pump.” And then asked the interviewer – well, let’s let them explain in the full transcript of the interview they published.
TRUMP: Have you heard that expression before, for this particular type of an event?
ECONOMIST: Priming the pump?
TRUMP: Yeah, have you heard it?
ECONOMIST: Yes.
TRUMP: Have you heard that expression used before? Because I haven’t heard it. I mean, I just…I came up with it a couple of days ago and I thought it was good. It’s what you have to do.
Yes, Trump thought he had just came up with the phrase, “Priming the pump” in 2017.
You can read the interview here.
But then, this really isn’t a surprise. After all, as Tony Schwartz (the journalist who actually wrote the bestseller, Art of the Deal, credited to Trump who insists he himself wrote it – for which Schwartz has been apologizing for it since) said, “Lying is second nature to him. More than anyone else I have ever met, Trump has the ability to convince himself that whatever he is saying at any given moment is true, or sort of true, or at least ought to be true.”
Which is likely why Trump actually, really, truly thinks he is the first person to ever realize that “U.S.” is also how you spell “us.” Something he never realized until he was almost 80 years old. After having spent four years as the president of the us.
And why I can’t think of a better way to say that here, no matter how snarky, that in trying to show himself a genius, Trump has only served to prove, again, but impactfully, that he is a very unstable idiot.
And as they say in sports, let’s go to the video --
