From the "Be Careful What You Wish For" Department
And so it's come to pass that the House Republican Party has kicked Liz Cheney (R-WY) out of her meaningless House GOP leadership position. I wrote here the other day about how I greatly admire the aggressive position she's been taking about Trump lying about the election and the party supporting him -- and have learned some additional things about her actions (such as organizing the major group of former military and intelligence officials to take out an ad before the election, in essence to warn Trump not to try to involve the military, though whether he was planning to or not has never been substantive) and have admired the speeches she's given on the House floor about the subject. I remain deeply opposed to her politics, to be clear, particularly since she supported Trump 93% of the time and is complicit for enabling him and bringing us to this situation. Her actions on the subject are indeed impressive, but I still look at them as somewhat like a person running around to organize people to help putting out a raging fire, that the person helped start.
The point here, though, is something different. It's that I don't think the House Republicans quite grasp the problem they've caused for themselves.
If Liz Cheney stayed in her meaningless post in GOP House leadership, she'd likely have occasionally spoken out about Trump, which would have been embarrassing, but mostly she'd talk about the very conservative agenda she and the Republican Party support, and which is at the heart of why she dislikes the attention and enabling paid to Trump's lies. But now having been kicked out of her meaningless party leadership position (by the party supposedly outraged by "cancel culture"...but I digress) and with likely a major GOP challenge against her for her House seat, I suspect that the Republican Party has just given Liz Cheney a huge platform and an even bigger megaphone, and she will now likely continue to use it almost every day from now until the mid-term elections. And she will probably use it to not only keep slamming Trump and his Big Lie that the party is supporting, but now also slam the party for its unwillingness to open its "tent" to others it needs to attract, but is instead "cancelling" people like her for speaking differently than how the GOP wants every member to speak. Worse, that way the GOP wants everyone to speak is to support the Big Lie and not the U.S. Constitution.
And the Republican Party did this to themselves. Because they are fascist and enabling Trump for four years and are complicit.
