Thanks to Valerie Alexander of the Speak Happiness website, she passes along that Williams-Sonoma stores offer very useful, fun, FREE (!!) classes -- more about technique than cooking per se, which you can find more information about here. Upcoming this month are classes on how to differentiate between and use different olive oils (to be held this Sunday), which apples are best for various kinds of cooking and how to use them for specific recipes, tips on preparing artichokes, and even pizza suggestions.
The William-Sonoma website notes that -- • Hour-long technique classes are free and include tastings of prepared dishes. • Participants enjoy 10% savings on select same-day store purchases. • Available at all stores; class times vary by store location. • Class size is limited – call your local store to register. Bon appetit from the Kitchens of Elisberg Industries. And the fine folks at Happy Happy Joy Joy.

I've been to a few of those Williams Sonoma classes and have enjoyed them. Also, selected Whole Foods stores offer free cooking classes, as well, where you get to taste what they prepare. I've been going for over a year to the one near me at 3rd and Fairfax in Los Angeles. Highly recommended: http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/events?store=6538

Select Sur La Table stores have classes too. I believe that there are fees to take them, but that they go deeper into their subjects than Williams Sonoma does. Also, at least here in Southern California, the large Macy's Home Stores have weekend cooking classes.

Thanks. Glad to have more entries on the Food List. I'm sure, in fact, that there are far better cooking classes out there than this Williams-Sonoma offer. Just to clarify, I was merely note it because it was free.
