Finally Getting in Harmony
Updated: Sep 27
If you've been reading these pages for a while, you know that I've been writing about the musical, Harmony, here and here and even...well, you get the point. For those newer, the show is written by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman about the real-life, hugely popular "close singing" group the Comedian Harmonists, who were a mixed-religion group in Germany during the 1930s. I saw the show 15 years ago in its pre-Broadway tryout in San Diego, and though with some flaws it was really quite good, most especially for a first production -- but it ran into bumps and never got to New York. However, last year it finally got revived in Atlanta at the Tony-winning Alliance Theatre to terrific reviews.
And next month it will be playing in Los Angeles at the Ahmanson Theatre. I mention this because tickets are now on sale. And if you live in the L.A. area, it's quite worth checking out. You can get ticket information here.
I mention this, too, because there are advantages to all this yammering. As it happened, my articles here and on the Huffington Post got to the attention of the production when the show was playing in Atlanta. We traded a few emails to get some background information. And time marched on. The result was that as of last week, though, after a bit of juggling, I'm scheduled to interview the show's creators, Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman, this coming week Updates as they occur. In the meanwhile, to fill in the time, here's a montage from the show with the title song.
