Cyrano: The Musical 3
I thought I'd try something a little bit different as we make our way through a few of the songs from the 1973 musical Cyrano. As I mentioned, even though the show was a big flop (just 49 performances), the record company released a two-disc set, which not only has the full score, of course, by Michael Lewis and Anthony Burgess, but includes about an hour of Burgess's dialogue, so you get a real sense of the whole show. (One of the reasons I feel comfortable saying how good the show is.) So, today, I figured I'd include a dialogue passage followed by the song it leads into.
This comes from the first act of the show. Cyarno (played by Christopher Plummer, who won the Best Actor Tony) is offered an honor that sounds good at first, until it becomes clear that there are strings attached. And for Cyrano, having to lower his standards is not only not even worth considering, but indeed an insult. That's the scene, and it leads into some of the core Cyrano philosophy expressed in the song, "No, Thank You."
