A little over a year ago, I told the long-and-winding tale here of being disheartened for 20 years that the tremendous auto repair shop run by two brothers just down the road from me had closed, only to discover that there was a repair shop only walking distance away run by the son of one of them (who's of course the nephew of the other) -- Baizer and Grimmett in West L.A.
Let me add just one small story to support what I saying in that story about how terrific their work and customer service is. I recently had a car problem where my left turn signal blinked normally, but the right turn signal was beating extremely fast, almost triple-time. I called Baizer and Grimmett, described the problem and set up an appointment. And so, today I went in. As I pulled into the bay, one of the owners came over. I expected him to start filling out all the vitals on his clipboard, my name, address and mileage -- but instead he started checking out the turn signal and wandering around the car. (Obviously, they had written down the reason I set up the appointment, so he was aware of the problem.) Without saying a word, he opened the trunk, pulled out something from the rear bulb compartment, went over to get a part, and plugged it in. I have no idea what this was -- he still hadn't said anything -- but it looked like a fuse, although I doubt that's exactly the case. He then tested the signal and said, "There, it's working." That's not the story. The story is that what he he said next was basically, "Goodbye." That's it. There was no charge. When I insisted -- it's their work, for goodness sake, their livelihood -- he wouldn't hear of it. He fixed the problem in literally two minutes and wouldn't accept a penny. If I rave about the work done by Baizer and Grimmett, that's one more reason why.
