Back to Amelie

Back in December, I wrote here about seeing a pre-Broadway tryout of a new musical based on the French movie, Amelie.  It wasn't great, and the score wasn't memorable, but it was tuneful and enjoyable, and I think I may have liked it more than the film.  (The main reason was that in the film, the main character doesn't talk much or at all, I don't recall exactly, and is a bit cloying for it.  In the musical -- being a musical -- she of necessity sings and a lot, and speaks, so I found it a little richer.)  It starred Phillipa Soo, who came to attention with her Tony-nominated performance in Hamilton, and she was terrific.

The show opened on Broadway a couple night ago.  The reviews seemed to be mixed, though more on the critical side, but all seemed to find some things to like about it.

Here's a video the show has released of the song, "Times are Hard for Dreamers."  Know two things -- first, this isn't what I call as necessarily being the best number in the show,  And second, this is a pop arrangement, not what was done on stage.  And honestly, I don't care much for it, it removes most of the charm.  But the song is still pleasant enough, and at least you'll get a nice sense of the show.  (At the time I wrote about it there were only a few short montage videos.  So, here's more.)
