What with the new live-action movie version of Beauty and the Beast opening soon, I thought this would be appropriate. It comes from a concert last September at Lincoln Center in honor the original animated movie's 25th anniversary. And with composer Alan Mencken at the piano accompanying her, this is the original Mrs. Potts, Angela Lansbury -- at age 90 -- reprising her version of the title song.
There's a lovely little introduction and homage by the on-stage characters to what appears to be her surprise appearance (though for all I know, she had been announced in the program). And Mencken's appreciation at the end seems heartfelt.
This is also a fine example of how acting and performance can overcome the vocal limitations of 90 years, but then at that age she's pretty darn good, even acting aside.
Robert J. Elisberg is a political commentator, screenwriter, novelist, tech writer and also some other things that I just tend to keep forgetting.
