A Study in Scarlett

Far and away, my favorite TV ad these days is the one for Amazon Alexa with real-life married couple Scarlett Johansson and SNL's Colin Jost, where she gives a truly horrible Cockney-Scottish-pirate performance of an equally terrible stage play she's rehearsing for him.  I've probably watched it 30 times at least, and will stop what I'm doing to watch again when it's on.  She's a hoot, including her woefully misplaced pride when finished, and the tag line following his deer-in-the-headlights expression is its equal.

It turns out that it's just a segment of a much-longer Super Bowl ad, which is very enjoyable.  Clearly, though, they knew what they were doing when they pulled this short clip out of it to use as their main ad because it's the gem of the whole thing.   (For time purposes, they cut out an amusing aside by Jost from the long version so that the shorter footage would fit.)

I have to admit, the first time I saw the short ad I didn't quite get the point.  Though  it wasn't a big deal since the joke (and her performance and the tag line) still worked.  And I didn't even get the exact point in the long version until about halfway through.  I now get it, and so it's more fun.  But as much as I like the long ad, and as much as I think they could have set it up better, it's all worth it for that one segment which is still all that I need.

But if you want a preview of the full ad, here 'tis --
