A Gnu Video of Flanders & Swann

The other week, I wrote another piece here about my faves Flanders & Swann, two British songwriters and performers who had to hit revues in London and on Broadway in the late 1950s and early 1960s – At the Drop of a Hat and At the Drop of Another Hat.

I mentioned that I was happily surprised to find a lot of videos by others who, over the years, have sung their songs, which are mostly forgotten today.  Some are done by amateurs, but quite a few are from professionals.  And this one leaps out because it was performed on…The Muppet Show!

What’s nice, too, about this video is that the person who posted it edited two versions together – starting and ending with Michael Flanders and Donald Swann, and having the Muppets fill in the bulk for the middle.  If Flanders & Swann had any particular “specialty,” it was – as they themselves noted – writing songs about animals.  And this about “The Gnu” is precisely that.
