While Trump has used invoking the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs in the way he's done so, that same law allows Congress to vote on ending a presidential emergency. It requires committee consideration within 15 calendar days after a resolution is introduced -- and then a full vote of the House within three days after that. Democrats did just that, offering a resolution. The problem for MAGOPs is that they didn't want to vote against Trump (since traditionally the party hates tariffs), but they also didn't want to vote for it, knowing that it was destroying the economy. So...what to do?? What the MAGOPs did was even more bizarre than it was craven and cowardly. They got around the "15 days" rule by altering reality. They inserted into the regulation that said -- well, no, if I just typed it out, you wouldn't believe it. So, here's is the last addition to the resolution: Yes, really. MAGOPs declared on March 11 that the next 22 months to be "one day"!! This is like the New Year's Eve episode of the TV sitcom Mad About You in which the Times Square ball drop gets stuck, and so "time stops," giving Jamie long enough to arrive on the rooftop where her husband Paul is filming it and spend "midnight" with him. Well...if anything shows how utterly terrified the infantile MAGOPs are of both Trump and tariffs, this is it. But hey, you have to admit, it also helps resolve the debate over whether to make Daylight Saving Time permanent! And for anyone still wondering -- this is why I say it isn't that MAGOPs in Congress enable Trump, but are fully complicit because they are the ones who actually pass the laws and make his policies theirs. There is so much more I could say about this -- and dearly want to say. But sometimes, the simplest choice is the very best way to fly. And so -- sing along!
