The ACLU may not be suing Trump's Executive Order on "Religious Liberty," which I mentioned this morning -- but an atheist group, Freedom from Religion Foundation is.
As I noted earlier, one of the features of the Executive Order is to order more lenient enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, which has prohibitions against tax-exempt organizations from involvement in political campaigning. Among other things, this not only would blur the First Amendment diving line protection between Church and State, but also would create wiggle room for "dark money" political donations.
The lawsuit claims that the Executive Order provides a selective benefit to religious organizations without any substantive risk to their tax-exempt status.
You may have started to see TV spots on behalf of the Freedom from Religion Foundation, since they've begun airing nationally within the past month or so, with Ron Reagan, Jr. appearing as their spokesman.
Robert J. Elisberg is a political commentator, screenwriter, novelist, tech writer and also some other things that I just tend to keep forgetting.
