I have a friend who was rightly ranting to me about how horrible Donald Trump is, and then added how he wouldn't be surprised if the Republicans found some way to drop him before the party's convention. No, they won't, I said, he's their nominee.. He has more than enough delegates. Besides, I added, if they ever actually did dump him, there would be a such a revolt in the GOP that it would truly destroy the party, since as horrible as Donald Trump is he has a lot support among the Republican base. They would riot and rip apart the party.
When my friend kept insisting it was possible, I offered to make him a bet -- for a whole whopping penny. He wouldn't make the bet. I sweetened the deal. I made him a penny bet at 1,000-to-1 odds. I'd owe him $10 if I lost, he'd owe me a penny. He still wouldn't make the bet. (Seriously.) But still he insisted it could happen. "If you're not willing to make a bet for a penny -- a penny! -- and at 1,000-to-1 odds," I told him, "then DO NOT bring up your theory about how this might happen again." This campaign is driving a great many people insane. And we don't even have official nominees yet...!!
