As has become quite obvious by this point, I write a lot about the beloved Northwestern. But today, we'll give some due to the University of Chicago, where both my mother and father went for undergraduate school. (For their 50th anniversary, I called the school and tracked down the football coach -- something that isn't as impressive as it might be at other colleges. The University of Chicago has one of the great traditions of football, with its legendary coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, but they actually dropped football for decades. They had only started it up again a few years earlier, on a very low-key level. The reason I called was to find out how to buy an official University of Chicago football jersey with my parents' names and the number "50." The coach loved the idea -- which was my brother John's, left to me to pull off... -- and so he helped accomplish that. But I digress...)
So, it's a pleasure to give some love to the University of Chicago. Though I would be remiss if I didn't mention that my dad also went to the University of Illinois for medical school -- and taught medicine at...(say it all together) the beloved Northwestern... But the floor is the University of Chicago's. This is from a few weeks back, but other news reared its ugly head. Take it away.
