I'm not particularly a big fan of Marlene Dietrich, but her rendition of "The Little Drummer Boy" is one of my favorites during the holiday season. Actually, let me be more specific -- though she does have a moving rendition of the song, it's her far-lesser know recording of the song in German, "Der Trommelmann," which I find so ethereal and evocative, particularly her "par um pah pah pums."
And as a bonus -- when I was searching for a recording of "Der Trommelmann" last year, by chance I came across another Christmas song recording by her, again in German, that I had never heard of before and found wonderful, despite not understanding a word. It's "Still War die Nacht" (Still Was the Night). Okay, Ii understood most of the title, but that's it.
