Checking my email that arrived during my travels today, a fascinating bit of tech news just showed up in my Inbox.
If you were thinking about getting a Surface RT tablet but have been wavering, perhaps about the price -- or whatever the reason -- this might be the time to jump in. For the time being, Microsoft has announced that they will not be charging extra for the Type cover or Touch cover. This is significant since the covers are what turn the Surface tablets in to significantly usable devices that far exceed the competition. And they cost either $120 (for the Type cover) or $130 (for the Touch). From my limited usage, I found the Type cover overwhelmingly better, with raised keys. There's no information on how long this "limited time" offer will go for, but offer in Europe similar to this one is set to run through June 30. Know that this offer is for the Surface RT only. That's the Microsoft tablet that (like most tablets) runs apps only, although unlike all other tablets includes an app version of Microsoft Office. The offer is not for the Surface Pro, which is more expensive and can run apps as well as any and all Windows programs. This is a very interesting (and very smart) offer with the cover. It’s quite a major savings. The two questions I have is – 1) how heavily will they promote this, so the public will know and 2) why only the RT? I assume that’s the one they want to boost sale with the most, and perhaps they figure that people who buy a Surface Pro will definitely be buying the keyboard as a necessity, so the offer isn’t required.
