For the “Mystery Guest” segment on this 1967 episode of What’s My Line?”, the contestant is a decidedly unexpected one -- though fitting for it being election season: Sen. Everett Dirksen, the U.S. Senate Minority Leader, a Republican from Illinois. The biggest question I had going in was how on earth would he disguise his voice, since it’s one of the most distinctive in Senate history – so much so that he recorded a spoken-word album that actually had a hit single from it, “Gallant Men.” (I posted it here a few years ago.) And oddly, he doesn’t really try to hide his voice, though gives very quick, one word answers. You’ll get a slight sense of his basso profundo during the conversation afterwards, though host John Daly does most of the talking. The full appearance is a lot of fun. Watching this, I harken back to the time in grade school when I did a project and chose my home state of Illinois. In doing research, I wrote to Dirksen’s office, since he was my senior senator, and got a packet of information back and a signed letter, which I still have. And will post below. Whether he actually signed it himself, it seems unlikely, but, hey, the dream lives on.., If you want to jump directly to the segment, it starts at the 13:45 mark.
