On Candice Bergen's TV series Murphy Brown, one of the running jokes was that the character of Murphy had absolutely no aptitude for singing. Well, here she is on The Muppet Show giving it all a go, gamely. They protect her well, so it comes of charmingly. Also of note, when the Muppets made their first film, The Muppet Movie, her father Edgar Bergen had a very small cameo with his dummy Charlie McCarthy. In an earlier draft, I wrote that they had no dialogue, but reader Douglass Abramson corrected me that indeed they did, following their prominent close-up. It was Bergen's final film appearance, since he passed away not long after the scene was filmed -- and the movie was dedicated "to the memory and magic of Edgar Bergen." So, that makes it all the more lovely to see her here.

Thanks much. I've corrected the original piece and posted an update. I don't know if the dialogue would be cut for TV -- after all, it's the set-up to a joke, which is Miss Piggy's appearance.

No problem. It had been so long since I watched the movie, I had to check YouTube in case my memory of their dialogue was crossed with my memories of their Muppet Show episode.
