I have no problem with people disagreeing with me. In fact, when I give the early drafts of my screenplays to people I always say two things -- Be honest, and be polite. That holds with anything I write or say. Alas, I've largely given up reading replies to my own tweets since, amid all the agreement, there are some that slip though that feel otherwise -- which is fine -- except they're usually expressed in ways that are nasty, thoughtless, racist and ad-hominen. But in this case, I couldn't help but look to see how the Trumpet supporters would find a way to try and explain that Trump was actually right, that Meryl Streep was "over-rated." It was teeth-gnashing, to say the least, but oddly fascinating. One person even wrote back that people in Europe and China didn't even know who she was. No, seriously. (I quickly picked two movies to reply with actual box-office results, one which had grossed $201 million overseas, and another that made $465 internationally -- both of which were more than the films made domestically.) Another person insisted they've never liked her terrible movies. Because, yes, that's what Meryl Streep is known for more than anything, terrible movies --
I didn't going into detail on that one, thouigh, because there aren't enough Twitter characters to write, Sophie's Choice, Oscar Best Picture Out of Africa, The Devil Wore Prada, Julie and Julia, Oscar Best Picture The Deer Hunter, Ironweed, Into the Woods, Oscar Best Picture Kramer vs. Kramer, Silkwood, Doubt and on and on and on, over almost 40 years. And that doesn't even count the 19 Oscar nominations, since it probably figures into the claim of "over-rated," never mind the dismissal of actual experts in the field giving those nominations. The reality is that you will always find at least 10% of the public who hates something, anything, even if it's puppies or pizza. Of course, I don't think anyone (if they were being honest) would think that Trump would have considered Meryl Steep "over-rated" if she had said how wonderful he was. Least of all would he himself thought that -- which I don't say as a subjective guess, but as an actual fact, since in August, 2015, Trump was quoted in the Hollywood Reporter as saying, "Meryl Streep is excellent. She's a fine person, too." (Apparently his self-vaunted memory isn't as good as he thinks it is.) That aside, what is his -- or the Trumpet supporters -- Big Complaint about what Meryl Streep actually said?? She was talking about decency and diversity and kindness. They're all against that??? Yes, she referenced in just one part the issue of a person in power ridiculing a disabled man, something Trump insists he didn't do. But that's the ONLY possible thing she said that he (and the Trumpets) could remotely dislike. And the thing is, that is what he did, and it's on tape and everyone saw it, no matter how many faux-denials. But there was nothing else. The speech was all Kumbaya. Pointed and critical, with a sadness, but that's what she was talking about, kindness and decency. In fact, although it was clear who she was referring to, she didn't even mention Trump by name. That's how low-key it was. Far more to the point, though, is that the most important thing about Trump's angry tweet in response is that it existed at all. What on God's earth is the President-elect doing tweeting about the Golden Globes (!!) -- the Golden Freaking Globes! -- only 12 days before he's going to be sworn in as President of the United States. You'd think he had a whole lot more important things to do. You'd also think if they can be upset about Meryl Streep, Hamilton, the Intelligence Services and more, he'd be able to find it in him to show equal outrage at Russia trying to manipulate the U.S. presidential elections... In the end, the most amusing thing about all this is that Trump lashed out at Meryl Streep as being "over-rated" -- yet has been whining that A-List celebs don't want to perform at his inaugural. Gee, go figure...
