Over time I've been posting a bunch of Mystery Guest videos from What's My Line? with Edgard Bergen, like this here and here (the latter with his daughter Candice). I thought it was time to show the good fellow in action. This comes from late in his life and isn't perhaps the very best of Bergen -- but it's still a treat, and what I like about it is that it shows off his strength: characterization. His technique was hardly ever great (indeed, he often joked about it, or had Charlie McCarthy do so), but it was how my made his partners seem so lifelike. And this video features him with his three main ones -- Charlie, of course, but also the little-seen spinster Effie Klinker, and it ends with perhaps my favorite, Mortimer Snerd, who gets most of the time here. So, at last, some Edgar Bergen.

Do you know who the show was taped for? Some of the Effie Klinker material wouldn't have passed S&P while Bergen was still alive.

I know, I was surprised by that material. But it was very funny. I believe this was for an HBO special, but can't swear to it.
