As I've often noted, one of the main things I like about the Mystery Guest segment on What's My Line? is that you get people who you would never expect to see on a game show. And this edition is doubly fun for that reason. It might not be at the level of "Oh, my God, he's on a game show??!" But it's still seriously impressive even without invoking the Deity.
The video comes from 1958 and features a New York stage actor who's starting to have a big film career, though hasn't broken through to icon yet -- a young fellow name Paul Newman. It's interesting to see how much Newman de-emphasizes his Hollywood work compared to the stage. But what's equally fun and helps make the episode special is noting that one of the game show panelists is someone who has become an icon at that point: David Niven.
TV might well have been the Vast Wasteland that upcoming FCC Chairman Newton Minow might be calling it in a few years, but...well, it was sure a Vast Wasteland with class...
