Okay, I suspect that earlier today most people weren't able to make the concert that Peter Breiner put on at home today at 11 AM PT. The concert was a treat, and it's now available online, so I thought I'd post it here.
As I noted, Breiner, classical composer-arranger-conductor-musician from Czechoslovakia who lives in New York. He’s recorded 250+ albums (and by that, I mean CDs that he recorded on, not that he made bootleg copies of off the radio or from friends' CDs. I feel obligated to make that clarification because the number is otherworldly) and while most are classical, but he has several of popular music. I've played selections from several that are gems -- Christmas songs (here are a couple) and Beatles songs which he arranged to sound like they were written as Baroque pieces. He also recently composed a ballet based on The Master and Margherita for the Slovak National Ballet company. This concert runs about 45 minutes. And while his other home concerts have been a mix of light classical music and popular standards, this week is exclusively musicals. As he notes in his introduction, he's had a love of musicals since growing up in Czecholslavakia (now Slovakia), and has even written a few.. Here's a rundown of the song that are on the program. (One note: Leading into his medley of songs from Harnick and Bock's Fiddler on the Roof, he mentions that yesterday was Sheldon Harnick's 96th birthday. I can't swear where he got this bit of arcane information, but given that I mentioned it to him the night before, I have my guess in to the judges...) 1. George Gershwin: Girl Crazy Embraceable You The Man I Love Porgy & Bess -- Summertime 2. Frederick Loewe: My Fair Lady On the Street Where You Live Wouldn't It Be Loverly I Could’ve Danced All Night 3. Jerry Bock: Fiddler on the Roof Sunrise, Sunset If I Were a Rich Man 4. Leonard Bernstein: West Side Story Somewhere 5. Peter Breiner: Anne of Green Gables Follow Your Heart Green Gables 6. Cole Porter: Kiss Me Kate So In Love
