This is a nice, little featurette from a recent episode of CBS Sunday Morning, I believe this past Sunday -- with a very brief but wonderful "twist" that, for me, makes it worthwhile. The other day, the Broadway musical, Beautiful, -- about the life of songwriter Carole King, using her music as the score -- celebrated its fifth anniversary. I've written about the show in the past, notably its original star, Jessie Mueller, who I saw back home in Glencoe, Illinois, at the Writers Theater before she left for Broadway. I also saw the show recently in Los Angeles, and while I didn't love it, I did enjoy it. And as I've noted, I had the opportunity to spend a brief time with Carole King at her home for an event I was invited to. (And she was charming.) So, this is an enjoyable featurette on her, and how the musical came to be, and her hesitancies about it, and more. All fine. But what's so fun here is that for the fifth anniversary, the producer had her appear on stage as herself near the very end -- and didn't tell the audience of the surprise beforehand -- and they have footage of that moment, and the audience going crazy when they realize what's happening. It's a good piece without that. With it, it's a treat.
